Description

This is a vernacular house situated on the north side of Clontafleece Road in Warrenpoint, Newry, County Down. It dates from approximately 1800 to 1819. The house is much altered and retains few original features.

The building is one and a half storeys high with three bays. It has a pitched roof covered with natural slate, featuring three painted stone chimneys – one at each gable and one between the left and centre bays. Modern timber eaves support half-round plastic rainwater goods. The walls are largely of random rubble construction, with the left bay remaining unpainted. The principal elevation faces south. A windbreak porch is set to the right of the centre bay, constructed of the same random rubble as the main building and featuring a monopitched natural slate roof. A single modern top-hung casement window is positioned to the left of the porch, with a whitewashed granite cill. Identical windows are found at each end bay. Small, later windows have been inserted into the centre and right bays, positioned immediately above the ground floor windows, and have concrete cills. The left gable is of unpainted random rubble and blank. The rear elevation is rendered to the left and centre bays, while the right bay has exposed random rubble. Each bay of the rear elevation has a single modern casement window with a granite cill, except for the centre bay window, which is a later insertion and lacks a cill. A modern timber door with a plain transom is set into the right bay of the rear elevation. The right gable is abutted by a lower outbuilding with a shallow monopitched corrugated metal roof, which is considered to be of no architectural interest. The upper portion of the right gable is whitewashed, and a small window is set into the gable apex.

A building is shown at this location on the 1834 Ordnance Survey 6-inch map, suggesting it was likely a single-storey vernacular building of around the same dimensions as the present house. Historic Buildings and Monuments Board (HMBB) records indicate the building was originally a single-storey cottage with harled walls, a slated roof, and windows with double-hung sashes divided into two panes by single vertical glazing bars, plus one plain sashed window. The house also originally had a recessed door within a lean-to porch.
