Description
Aghavilly Cottage is a house built between 1800 and 1819 in the townland of Aghavilly, near Warrenpoint, Co Down. Originally a two-storey, three-bay house with a gabled extension projecting to the left of the front façade, it has undergone extensive alterations and now retains no architectural or historic features of interest. The original gabled roof has been replaced with a hipped roof, the render has been removed, a front porch has been taken down, and modern windows and cills have been inserted.
The house was shown on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map and described in the 1835 Valuation as measuring 32 feet by 21 feet 6 inches by 13 feet. Similar dimensions were recorded in the 1863 Valuation. The house was referred to as Aghavilly Cottage on the 1902 Ordnance Survey map. A 1972 survey described it as a two-storey, harled and whitewashed house with squat, plain, side-sashed windows, a glazed timber porch, and a gable facing west. A slide from the same survey depicts a symmetrical two-storey, three-bay house with a single-bay gabled extension. This original house had a pitched natural slate roof, a rendered skew to the right gable, and rendered chimneys. The left gable connected to the roof of the extension and also had a chimney. Walls were harled and whitewashed with an advanced basecourse, and a single-storey gabled porch was attached to the central bay. The front gable featured a rendered wall below a fixed 2x2-paned window, a plain cill, and t+g sheeted gable over. Exposed box sliding sash windows with painted stone cills were present in the remaining bays. The extension walls were smooth, rendered, and painted, with a window on each floor in the front gable, each a pair of side-hung casements with a top-hung transom.
