Description
This is an attractive, formalised vernacular house occupying a prominent hillside location on the north side of Moygannon Road, Warrenpoint. The house is little altered externally and retains its original yard, outbuilding, and gates.
Dating primarily from the early 20th century, the two-storey, two-bay house has a pitched natural slate roof running east-west, with cement-rendered chimneys on each gable. The eaves are advanced, and the roof has half-round metal rainwater goods. The rendered walls are lined and feature band rusticated stepped quoins at all corners. The principal, south-facing elevation has single window openings in each bay; those on the first floor are smaller than those below. All windows have concrete cills that have been covered with corrugated metal. A single-storey windbreak porch abuts the left side of the right bay, featuring a gabled natural slate roof with a crested terracotta ridge and decorative bargeboard (partially replaced with plain timber). The porch has blank cheeks and a vertically tongued-and-grooved (t+g) sheeted door with a transom window above. The left gable is blank, with a modern plastic soil pipe attached to its left side. The rear elevation has no door and features windows consistent with the front elevation on both floors. The right gable is also blank.
To the immediate right of the house stands a single-storey shed clad in corrugated metal. The east side of the yard is marked by a pair of square rubble granite gate posts with pyramidal copings, supporting a traditional flat iron gate. A single-storey, two-bay outbuilding aligned north-south encloses the west side of the front yard. It has a pitched natural slate roof and rubble granite walls, with blank gables and rear walls. The east elevation of the outbuilding has two modern doors on the south bay and a pair of modern doors on the north bay. The front of the small front yard is enclosed by a hedge, and its west end is marked by a pair of gate piers with one-and-a-half flat iron gates. A long, hedge-lined lane leads from the road to the house.
The 1834 Ordnance Survey map shows the house in its current form. It was not valued in the First Valuation book, suggesting a former single-storey thatched vernacular building. It is recorded in the Second Valuation of 1861, valued at £2, with offices noted as being in progress in 1863. The valuation increased to £4 in 1913, indicating a substantial refurbishment or rebuild.
