Description
West Lodge was constructed between 1880 and 1899 as part of the estate associated with Tamnaharry House, situated on the east side of Derryleckagh Road, Newry. The lodge was designed by Thomas J. Duff of Newry for Mr. Reilly, who had recently married Harriet Hamilton, an heiress whose family had previously occupied the site.
The lodge is a single-storey, two-bay structure. It has a pitched roof covered in natural slate with overhanging eaves and trefoil-tailed decorative bargeboards on each gable, topped with pointed timber finials. A tall, modern brick chimney is positioned on the rear pitch. Modern metal rainwater goods run along the roofline, and the walls are cement-dashed and painted. All windows are modern, top-hung timber casements with painted concrete sills. The front elevation, facing west, features a small gabled porch on the right end, mirroring the main roof design with bargeboards and finials; the porch’s original doorway has been replaced with a window opening to the front and one on the left cheek. A modern door is centrally located on the front wall, flanked by windows. The left gable is adjoined by a modern, single-storey, flat-roofed return which extends to the rear and encompasses the entire rear elevation – these additions have no architectural interest. The right gable has a single window, and above it is a decorative rendered cartouche displaying a crest. Historical gates, originally positioned at the left corner of the front elevation, were erected by Dr. Bradley, who occupied Tamnaharry House between 1896 and 1906. They have since been relocated to allow the lodge to function as a separate property. The lodge has been entirely altered and now retains nothing of architectural or historical interest. It was delisted on December 19, 2001.
