Description
West Lodge, situated on the Mourne Park Estate off Tullyframe Road in Kilkeel, Newry, originally served as a gate lodge, mirroring the style of the east gate lodge (listed separately - HB 16/05/67). Construction likely occurred between 1840 and 1859, demonstrated by its appearance on the 1859 Ordnance Survey map, as opposed to its absence on the 1834 map. According to Dean’s Gazetteer, the lodge was initially a single-storey stuccoed building in a Regency style with a low-pitched hipped roof, positioned beside a ford and later accessed by a footbridge.
The lodge is a single-storey structure with three bays, aligned east-west within the estate boundary, on the east side of the White Water River. It features a pitched concrete tiled roof, with a hip to the west and a gable to the east. The south-facing façade is a mix of painted rubble stone to the first and second bays, and smooth rendered finish on the third bay. The first bay contains a modern door and casement window, set within a painted granite cill. The second bay has a similar window, and the third bay a modern door. All openings are protected by metal security grilles. A single-storey lean-to extension abuts the left gable, which has a small casement window. The west wall is blank, and the return cheeks each have small modern casement windows. The rear and right elevations are also blank, except for a small modern casement window in each bay at the rear.
The building has been substantially remodelled as a hostel in the 1980s, resulting in a loss of architectural interest. The front garden is enclosed by a low granite rubble wall. To the west, parallel with the river, is the estate boundary wall with gate piers marking a former ford (associated wall listed separately - HB 16/05/066). Remnants of a four-span concrete footbridge over the river remain, but the timberwork is absent, along with the steps leading up to it on the east side.
