Description
East Gate Lodge is a one-storey, three-bay dwelling with a rear annex, situated just inside the eastern boundary wall of the Mourne Park demesne, near Kilkeel. The property served as a gate lodge to Mourne Park, as indicated on maps dated 1834 and 1859. It is likely to date from the late 18th or early 19th century.
The house has a pitched roof covered with natural slate tiles and clay ridge tiles. The exterior walls are whitewashed lime dash over random rubble, with a projecting eaves course. A smooth rendered chimney with a concrete cope sits between the first and second bays. The windows are arranged in pairs, each with a single sash window and a casement window. All windows are fitted with external wooden shutters and painted granite cills. A painted sheeted timber entrance door is located at the left of the south-facing principal elevation, which faces a lane leading into the demesne.
A narrow, single-storey lean-to with a natural slate roof and plastic rainwater goods abuts the left gable. The rear elevation is completely abutted by a lower, single-storey annex, constructed of similar materials to the main block, though without a chimney. It is uncertain whether this annex is original or a later addition. The rear elevation of the annex features a sheeted timber door at each end, between which are three pairs of shuttered windows; all are 1/1 sashes with a casement window to the right. A large, single-pane, shuttered window is located on the right-hand cheek of the annex. The right gable of the main block and the left gable of the annex, when viewed from the front and back respectively, are blank and form part of the boundary wall.
A back garden is accessed on the left side of the house through a wrought-iron gate set between a pair of finely dressed, square granite pillars with oversailing pyramidal granite caps. The garden is enclosed by a random rubble granite wall.
