Description
The Grange at Mourne Park Estate is an extensive range of buildings constructed around two yards, built of granite with machined-brick dressings. Nearly all structures are derelict, with only the two houses at the southern end of the range remaining intact.
The south-western house is a two-storey, three-bay structure with an integral rear return. It has a hipped natural slate roof with swept projecting eaves, clay ridge and hip tiles. A large red brick chimney with projecting courses and corbelled top sits on the party wall between the first and second bays as viewed from the south. Tall red brick chimneys rise from the eaves on the right-hand side, with a third chimney on the rear wall of the 'L'-shaped return; all have projecting red brick courses and corbelled tops. The walls are dressed squared random rubble granite with raised strap pointing and ashlar granite quoins at corners. Window and door jambs and heads are dressed in machined brick, with all jambs featuring stop-end chamfers. Plastic half-round rainwater goods are fitted throughout. Plastic half-round rainwater goods are present.
The main façade faces south onto what is now a golf course. A large modern flat-roofed extension abuts the ground floor on the left. The exposed right side displays two segmental-headed 6/6 sliding sash windows with horns and granite cills, protected by metal window grills. At first-floor left, above the extension, is a large modern picture window that disrupts the façade's balance. The right bay has three segmental-headed 6/6 sliding sash windows, with the right two aligned with those below. The front extension is flat-roofed, constructed in grey concrete brick with large picture windows.
The left elevation is three openings wide and incorporates the integral rear return. A modern single-storey extension forming a porch abuts the ground floor; this porch has a shallow hipped artificial slate roof and white painted smooth rendered walls. Original openings in the main block's wall have been altered. Above are three 6/6 sliding sash windows matching the façade pattern, each with ornamental white-painted rendered and pinnacled aprons to their cills. The north-facing gable of the return is blank and is abutted at ground floor by a single-storey extension with a hipped natural slate roof and red brick chimney at the ridge end. A modern skylight sits on the left pitch facing the yard. The walls are of granite rubble brought to courses. A modern granite block screen wall is built around a central entrance door on the right cheek. To the right of this entrance is a modern two-pane casement window. The end gable has two modern casement windows in stepped brick surrounds; that to the left is a former doorway. The left cheek, facing the rear yard, is abutted to the left by a flat-roofed extension of the main block. The exposed section to the right has two casement windows, with that at the right being a former door. A third window opening is now infilled. At first floor on this cheek is a 6/6 sash window.
The rear elevation of the main block is abutted at ground floor by modern extensions. The remaining wall above has two openings: at left is a small 1/1 sliding sash, and in the middle is a 2/2 sliding sash. The extensions have flat concrete roofs, smooth rendered cement walls, and modern windows with metal security grilles. The right elevation of the main block is abutted by a modern flat-roofed extension behind a granite wall to the façade. The wall above is blank.
