Walled garden, Mourne Park Estate, Newry Road, Kilkeel, Newry, Co Down, BT34

This is a large walled garden, dating from approximately 1820 to 1839, situated immediately south of a pair of estate workers’ houses within the Mourne Park demesne, near Kilkeel. The garden is primarily of historical interest due to its association with the larger Mourne Park estate.

The garden is enclosed by a high wall constructed of squared and coursed granite rubble. A coachway is set into the west wall, featuring ashlar granite piers supporting a pair of corrugated metal gates. A tall timber pedestrian gate, also set within similar ashlar piers, is located on the north wall, opposite the estate workers’ houses.

Inside the garden, few original features remain, aside from a few old fruit trees and a derelict, three-bay lean-to greenhouse that abuts the west wall. The greenhouse has overlapping vertical timber framing for glazing on both its roof and walls, resting on a cement-rendered brick plinth. The greenhouse roof apex rises above the top of the boundary wall, with a slight pitch to the rear to align with the wall head.

The garden is shown on an Ordnance Survey map from 1834 and is located within the townland of Ballyrogan or Mourne Park.
