Description
This is a low, single-story lodge, significantly altered and extended, situated on the western boundary of the former grounds of Mourne Wood House. It is linked to Mourne Wood House and its listed status (HB16/04/006). Built likely between 1800 and 1819, it originally served as the west gate lodge for Mourne Wood. The lodge is aligned north-south, with its entrance on the southern gable, aligning with the original driveway that runs east-west.
The roof is covered with artificial slate, featuring a concrete-coped chimney on the north gable. An outshot, running east-west and matching the main ridge height and chimney style, adjoins the east pitch of the main ridge. A lower-pitched roof, running north-south and also with a chimney, abuts the north pitch and the remaining east pitch of the main block. The exterior walls are pebble-dashed over a smooth rendered basecourse. Windows and doors are predominantly plastic, with thin concrete sills, although some original features remain.
A porch with a hipped artificial slate roof extends from the southern gable of the main block. This porch has a part-glazed door and a top-hung casement window on each side. The west elevation has two windows: a linear three-paned casement on the left and a top-hung casement, similar to those on the porch, with a granite sill on the right. The east elevation is flanked by return blocks on both sides. The south elevation of the left return block features a top-hung casement with a granite cill and an electricity meter box nearby. The east gable of this return is blank, and its north elevation is bordered by the second return. This second return block projects forward to the north. Its east wall has a modern door and two top-hung casement windows. The north (rear) gable is blank. A flat-roofed extension with a modern, two-paned linear window is attached to the north gable of the main block, abutting the second return. A former east gate lodge, located near grid reference J 282120, previously existed but has since been lost.
