Description
West Lodge, including boundary walls and gates, is a finely detailed single-storey, three-bay rectangular-plan lodge, possibly designed by John Smith and dated 1826. It is located at the west entrance to the Kemnay House policies. The lodge features triangular-plan oriel windows, steeply-pitched gables, and decorative bands of fishscale and lozenge pattern slates, along with elegant brattishing on the roof ridges. The structure is built from large blocks of bull-faced ashlar with narrow polished margins and quoin strips, and it has a deep base course.
The entrance elevation facing the driveway to the northwest is symmetrical, incorporating a projecting centre gable with chamfered outer angles. It includes a two-leaf panelled timber door with a segmental plate glass fanlight below a blind panel, and bipartite windows in the flanking bays. There are oriel windows under elongated swept roofs on the northeast and southwest gables, and three small modern rooflights on the rear (southeast) elevation.
Inside, the lodge has a simple layout with two main rooms that retain moulded cornices and fireplaces. The windows are timber sash and case with plate glass glazing. The decorative slated roof features ridge brattishing, and squat coped ashlar ridge stacks with clay cans flank the centre gabled bay. The eaves are deeply overhanging with plain bargeboarding.
The boundary walls are stepped, low, and flat-coped, made of bull-faced stone, and they are complemented by decorative ironwork gates and finialled gatepiers.
