Description
This ice house is an interesting feature of the Narrow Water Demesne estate. It appears to have been constructed between 1800 and 1819. The structure, located in an elevated beech tree copse in a field to the northeast of the walled garden, consists of a subterranean chamber accessed by an L-shaped passageway. Within this passageway is a flight of steps that descend from the southeast; these steps have rubble stone side walls and a red brick barrel vaulted roof, which has now collapsed. A small circular opening dressed with granite provides light to the top of the main chamber and is set in the ground to the southwest of the steps. The ice house is not depicted on the first, second, or third edition Ordnance Survey maps. It is currently in a derelict condition and remains in private ownership.
