Description
The icehouse in the garden of Windley, dating from the early 19th century, was formerly part of Harbottle Castle. Constructed from ashlar, it is built into a steep bank and features a retaining wall and a square porch, although the door is no longer present.
Inside, a short passage with three right-angled turns leads to the ice chamber, which is square and approximately 15 feet deep. The chamber has a tunnel-vaulted roof and offsets at regular intervals along the sides that once supported wooden shelves for holding ice. Additionally, there is a trap door in the vault, covered by a massive stone slab, which provides further access.
