Description

Harbottle Castle is a house that has been divided into three units. It likely has an older core but was entirely rebuilt in 1829 by John Dobson for the Fenwicke-Clennels. The building is constructed of ashlar stone and has a roof made of Scottish and Welsh slate, showcasing a classical style. It is two storeys high and features a front block with five bays across and a lower three-bay service wing on the west side, which includes attached service ranges around a courtyard at the rear.

The east front, which was the former entrance, has a mid-19th century stone porch. This porch features a two-leaf half-glazed door with a tall margined fanlight, flanked by narrow round-headed windows. The gabled roof is adorned with ball finials and kneelers. Inside the porch, the original doorway is round-headed with a keystone and is framed by attached Tuscan columns, complete with a frieze and cornice.

The ground floor has 2-pane sash windows, while the upper floor features 12-pane sashes. A broad band runs along the first floor, and there is a moulded cornice. The roof is hipped with square, corniced ridge stacks.

On the left side of the building, there is a late 19th-century canted bay window and a doorway with a Tuscan entablature, along with additional 12-pane sashes. The right side, or rear of the house, is more irregular, featuring 12-pane sashes and a round-headed staircase window with intersecting glazing bars.

Inside, the property includes six-panel doors with panelled reveals, panelled shutters, and a notable wood fireplace with an eared architrave surround and foliage panels in the frieze.
