Description
The Clennel Memorial Fountain is a fountain built in 1880 by McMillan of Alnwick, designed in the High Victorian Gothic style using ashlar and marble. It features nine steps with low stone walls and square corniced piers that lead up to the terrace where the fountain is located.
The fountain has a square base with two chamfered offsets. On the south side, there is a marble inscription dedicated to Mrs. Clennel of Harbottle Castle, which reads: "Devoted the powers of an active mind, the impulses of a generous heart, and the industry of a busy life to the welfare and happiness of the inhabitants of Harbottle." The fountain includes semi-octagonal basins on the east and south sides, set within trefoiled round-headed recesses. On the west side, water flows from an iron gargoyle.
Above the fountain, there is an elaborate Gothic canopy featuring pointed, trefoiled arches and marble columns with foliage capitals. A smaller arrangement above the round solid care includes intricate crocketed gables.
