Description
This is a substantial vernacular building, likely constructed between 1820 and 1839, situated on the north side of Newry Road in Kilkeel, County Down. It is a single-storey, three-bay structure facing south. The roof is pitched and covered with natural slate, featuring cement coped verges and two rendered chimneys. Each chimney has a corbelled red brick coping that extends up the party walls. The exterior walls are finished with a painted wet-dash render.
A projecting gabled porch, sharing the eaves with the main roof and featuring natural slate and a decorative bargeboard, provides shelter for the main entrance located centrally within the building. The entrance itself consists of a six-panelled painted timber door. Four windows are positioned on the front facade; all are vertically divided 2/2 sliding sashes with painted granite cills and smooth render architraves. One window sits on either side of the porch in the central bay (the left window has metal bars), and one is centrally located in each of the end bays. A raised decorative render band runs around the windows. A t+g sheeted painted timber door, alongside concrete block repairs to the wall above, is found on the left gable's right-hand side.
The rear elevation incorporates a lean-to return abutting the central bay. This return is covered with a corrugated metal roof and has rendered walls constructed of block or brick. It features two metal windows, a t+g sheeted door in the rear wall, and a metal window to its right-hand cheek. The left-hand cheek lacks any openings, while the remaining wall to the right is also devoid of openings. A lower, gabled outhouse is attached to the right gable of the main building. This outhouse has a natural slate roof and rendered walls. It has a t+g sheeted door with a small vent above on its gable, and a t+g sheeted painted timber door on the wall to the left.
A building is depicted at this location on an Ordnance Survey map from 1834. It was not included in the 1838 Valuation, suggesting a valuation below £5. The building was later used as a post office after the Second World War.
