Description

This is a dressed granite milestone situated on the west side of the road outside 50 Annalong Road, Ballymartin, near Kilkeel. It is one of seventeen surviving milestones of a total of twenty-four that originally marked the route between Newry and Newcastle. Dating to between 1780 and 1799, the milestone is likely to be of early 19th century origin, based on the measurement being given in Irish miles. The stone post measures 28cm by 28cm and stands 90cm high, finished with a pyramidal top. Inscribed on each of its three road-facing sides is the number ‘17’ in 15cm high lettering, representing the distance in Irish miles from Newry. The milestone was first depicted on an Ordnance Survey map from 1919. It possesses industrial archaeological interest.
