Description
A pair of single-storey buildings, originally forming a single house, were situated facing east towards the sea on an elevated site in Moneydorragh Beg, Annalong. Construction likely occurred between 1760 and 1779, and the property is shown on an 1834 Ordnance Survey map. The buildings displayed vernacular characteristics. The roofs were gabled and covered in natural slate; the building on the right had a higher ridge. The building on the left was originally thatched but was later slated, with three brick corbelled courses used to raise the eaves. Flat-roofed extensions were added to the rear, and a dormer window was situated at the rear of the right-hand building. The exterior walls of both buildings were constructed with wet dash rendering, an unpainted finish, a black painted smooth render base course, and granite corner blocks. The left building had three bays, and the east elevation featured a new framed and sheeted door within a central gabled porch with granite steps and threshold. New, appropriately designed 4/4 sliding sash windows with granite cills, and a small six-paned casement window, were located to the left of the porch. The right-hand building’s east elevation retained its original sheeted door, with one window on either side; the window on the right was positioned higher, and both were 6/6 sliding sash windows. A pump, inscribed “J. Gurrie,” was in the front yard, and a flat iron gate was also present. Originally, the right-hand building served as a creamery. A 1972 survey described a thatched cottage with a chimney on each gable, margin-paned sash windows, a corrugated iron roofed addition to the east, a sheeted door, a timber and metal ridge, and a single window at the rear, along with a corrugated iron roofed annex. A fire around 1987-88 damaged the interior of the left building, which was subsequently rebuilt with a slate roof and modern interior. Inappropriate timber windows with concrete cills were fitted to the rear. The property was delisted on 27 July 1998 due to a combination of fire and inappropriate alterations, which diminished its historic and architectural interest. Site visits confirmed the building had been demolished.
