Description

This is one of several milestones of a similar design that marked what was once the main turnpike road between Belfast and Dublin. It stands on the verge of the road on the western side, near 168 Belfast Road, Newry. The milestone is a relatively scarce example of an industrial monument.

The milestone is a roughly 75cm high post made of finely dressed granite, featuring a sloping top and a chamfered base. A recessed area on the front originally held a cast iron plaque, which is now missing. Two bolt holes run straight through the stone from front to back.

It closely resembles a similar milepost near Millbrook Villas on the Belfast Road, and it is likely to date from the early 19th century, although it was not shown on Ordnance Survey maps until 1903. The milestone is situated along the Banbridge – Newry turnpike road and is of industrial archaeological interest.
