Milestone, Near Millview Terrace, Belfast Road, Newry, Co Down

This is a cast-iron milestone set into a finely dressed granite post, likely dating from the early 19th century (approximately 1800 to 1819). It stands on the verge of the Belfast Road, on the left side, near Millview Terrace in Newry. The milestone is one of several similar examples that once marked the main Belfast to Dublin turnpike road, and subsequently the Banbridge to Newry turnpike road.

The milestone consists of a cast-iron plaque with a pointed head set into a granite post and secured with two wrought-iron bolts to the back of the stone. The plaque is 30cm wide and 34cm high at the side, rising to 46cm at the apex, and is 4cm high overall. Raised text on the plaque indicates distances in Irish miles, reading “Dublin 51 / Newry 1 / Banbridge 9”. The design is very similar to a milestone located in Hill Street, Newry. Although not depicted on the 1858 Ordnance Survey map, its presence reflects its function on a key historical route. The milestone demonstrates industrial archaeological interest and remains in its original roadside position.
