Description

This milestone, situated at the left corner of 81 Newry Street on the north side of the road in Rathfriland, Co Down, likely dates to the late 18th or early 19th century, based on its function of marking distance in Irish miles from Dublin. The milestone is constructed from roughly and irregularly dressed, white-painted granite. It stands 48cm high and measures 42 x 24cm in cross-section, displaying the figure '56' in 23cm high lettering. The milestone is not depicted on any town maps and is of local interest due to its rarity, exhibiting industrial archaeological significance as a surviving example of its type. It is located within the Lissize townland and is owned by the local government.
