Description

This is a granite milestone situated between 132 and 150 Killowen Road, Rostrevor, Newry, County Down. It is a notable survivor, one of roughly twenty milestones remaining out of an original twenty-four that once lined the road between Newry and Newcastle. The milestone is a finely-dressed granite post with a pyramidal top, located on the left-hand side of the road when travelling towards Kilkeel. It projects approximately 75cm above the ground and measures 30cm square in cross-section. The number '10' is incised in lettering 14cm high on each of its three sides facing the road. The measurement, indicating distance from Newry, suggests a likely date of the early 19th century. Although absent from all editions of the Ordnance Survey map, its presence shows early industrial archaeological interest.
