Description

This stone marks where a buried water main to Warrenpoint crosses under the road from its abstraction point higher up on Cassy Water. It is of finely-dressed granite and is embedded in a random rubble wall on west side of the road. It stands 94cm high, has a semicircular top and is of rectangular cross section, 30cm wide by 22cm deep. Neatly carved into its road face are the capital letters W.W.W. [= Warrenpoint Water Works]. To its immediate left is an unrelated water trough fed by a pipe from the slope above. The take-off, at the junction of the Cassy and Cross Waters (grid J 228 183), comprises a small vertical concrete weir across the stream, with opening on right bank into a small smooth cement rendered building with semicircular roof.
