Description
This is a boundary marker located adjacent to 23 Lissize Road, Rathfriland, Newry, County Down. Constructed sometime between 1900 and 1919, the stone marker is primarily of local interest but displays industrial archaeological significance. It is a roughly dressed granite block with a rounded top, standing approximately 60cm high and measuring 32cm by 23cm in cross-section. The face of the marker that fronts the road is smoother and incised with letters, 5cm in height, reading 'PBW', denoting the Portadown and Banbridge Waterworks. The stone appeared on the 1918 Ordnance Survey six-inch map and marks the route of the Portadown and Banbridge Waterworks pipeline originating from Foffany Dam, which was opened in 1909. It is one of several similar stones, and can be compared with other markers recorded as HB 16/07/048, /061, /062, and /063.
