Description

This dressed granite marker stone stands on the south verge of Ballyweely Road, near Rathfriland, Newry, County Down. It measures approximately 30 by 20 centimeters in cross-section and protrudes about 70 centimeters above ground level. The upper corners of the stone are rounded. The side facing the road is finely dressed and bears the inscription "PBW" in capital letters, measuring 5 centimeters in height.

The stone is one of a series that marked the route of the Portadown and Banbridge Waterworks pipeline, originating from Foffany Dam, which opened in 1909. Similar stones are documented elsewhere (reference numbers HB 16/07/048, 0/61, and /063). The stone was depicted on the 1919 Ordnance Survey 6-inch map. It is of industrial archaeological interest.
