Description

This dressed granite marker stone stands on the left verge of the road at the junction of the Ballycoshone Road and the Ballyweely Road, near Rathfriland, County Down. Measuring 31cm by 21cm in cross-section, with a height of 40cm above ground, the stone has rounded corners at the top. The side facing south is finely dressed and bears the inscription "PBW" in capital letters, 5cm high.

The marker stone is one of several that indicate the route of the Portadown and Banbridge Waterworks pipeline, which drew water from Foffany Dam and was opened in 1909. Similar stones are located nearby (HB16/07/061-063). The stone is shown on the 1919 Ordnance Survey map. It possesses industrial archaeological interest and was noted as derelict.
