Boundary marker on Bryansford Rd, Hilltown, Co Down, BT34 5XQ

This granite boundary marker stands on the verge of the Bryansford Road, on the north side of Hilltown, County Down, marking the boundary between the townlands of Goward and Ballynanny, approximately 100 metres east of the junction with the Hilltown-Kilkeel road. The marker is roughly 22 centimetres in cross-section and 65 centimetres high, with a rounded top. Inscribed on the west face in 12.5-centimetre high letters is "NB". The other faces are blank.

The marker was first shown on the 1919 Ordnance Survey six-inch map, though it is likely to be considerably older, dating to around 1820-1839. The inscription "NB" refers to Narcissus Batt, a notable Belfast entrepreneur and landowner in the eastern Mourne Mountains during the early 19th century. He is also commemorated by Batt’s Wall, which extends from Crotlieve Mountain to Shanlieve, and by a boundary stone in the Mourne Mountains West townland.
