Description

The site comprises the ruinous remains of a former linen beetling and wash mill complex, situated on the left bank of the River Bann near Rathfriland. The buildings primarily hold historical interest, demonstrating the River Bann’s importance as a power source for linen processing, particularly during a period of increased flax cultivation linked to the American Civil War in the early 1860s.

Three buildings are discernible within the complex. The first is a two-storey range aligned east-west at the northwest corner, constructed of random rubble with a pitched natural slate roof. A large sliding door now occupies the right end of the south façade, and the interior is gutted. To the northeast of this is a smaller, ruinous building, now with a monopitch corrugated metal roof, connected by a low, ruinous wall. A two-storey block of houses, originally workers' dwellings, is situated at the southern end, along the approach lane, and is now reduced to a single storey and ruinous condition. A mill dam is clearly visible to the east, but there are no visible traces of races or a waterwheel pit.

The complex was shown on an Ordnance Survey map from 1834. In 1836, an Ordnance Survey Memoir identified the site as belonging to James Lindsay and Sons, and comprising beetling and wash mills, constructed around 1828. An 1859 Ordnance Survey map labelled one of the structures a beetling engine and drying house. A valuation from approximately 1861 indicated that William Lindsay was the owner, with eight beetling engines operating both day and night, and the wash mill containing a starching mangle and three rub boards. The workers' houses were also noted at this time. A revised valuation in 1866 documented the presence of a flax mill with eight stocks. Both the beetling and flax mills ceased operations in 1894. The buildings are now recorded as derelict and possess industrial archaeological interest.
