Footbridge over River Bann, Off Kilkeel Rd, Hilltown, Newry, Co Down, BT34 2JU

This footbridge spans the River Bann immediately downstream of a ford. Primarily of technical interest due to its pragmatic, on-site construction method, it is similar to several other bridges on the Bann which have since been improved. The bridge dates to between 1900 and 1919, as it was not shown on the 1902 Ordnance Survey map, but appears on the 1919 edition. It consists of four metal girder spans supported by shuttered concrete piers and abutments; the piers taper inwards from base to top, featuring angled cutwaters at deck level. The concrete deck rises slightly towards the central pier and was cast between the side girders, utilising falsework formed by slightly arched corrugated metal, some of which remains in situ. It incorporates a handrail composed of three horizontal bars, externally braced, terminating in square capped concrete pillars at either end. The bridge is 1.07 metres (3 feet 6 inches) wide. It is of industrial archaeological interest and is currently in use as a bridge.
