Description

The building at 36 Main Street, Hilltown, is a two-story, three-bay house and former shop situated on a slight rise to the north side of Main Street. It was likely constructed between 1800 and 1819.

The building's architectural features are now largely modern, having lost any original historic character. It has a pitched natural slate roof with clay ridges and modern box section gutters set beneath timber eaves, and downpipes run down the right side of the facade. The chimneys are concrete-coped and cement-rendered; one is positioned between the left and central bays, and the other on the right gable. The walls are modern, smooth cement-rendered with a recessed basecourse and are painted.

The ground floor is divided into three bays: a coachway on the left, a residential bay in the center, and a shop on the right. The coachway has a semi-elliptical head and a sheeted timber door including a wicket. The central bay has a window to the left and a modern multi-panelled door to the right. The shop bay has two-paned windows with transoms above each, and three steps lead up to a sheeted timber door also with a glazed transom. All windows are modern uPVC double-glazed units with thin concrete sills. There are five windows on the first floor, with the left window (over the coachway) having a higher cill. The left gable abuts an adjacent property, while the right gable is blank and cement-rendered. The rear elevation has not been inspected.

The building appears on the 1834 valuation map and was described as a house in the circa 1861 valuation book. A 1972 survey card described it as a terrace of two-story buildings with lined rendered walls and slated roofs, featuring five double-hung windows with plain sashes on the first floor, a three-light shop window on the ground floor, and two entrances with plain fanlights above the doors.
