Description

Three storey shop with attic on the west side of Hill Street, built between 1820 and 1839. The building is constructed with render walls and features decorative rustication details, though the modern shopfront and unsympathetic internal alterations limit its architectural significance.

The pitched natural slate roof is punctuated by a brick chimney to the right gable and a cement render chimney to the left. The eaves course is stepped with a cyma recta moulding and cast metal rainwater goods, the down pipe shared with the adjacent property at number 74.

The ground floor is dominated by a modern shopfront with a recessed central door flanked by two windows. The older posts supporting the fascia remain but are now covered by a plastic sign box running across the facade. To the left is a plain transom door providing access to the upper floors, with two nameboards attached to the wall beside it.

The first floor features four equally spaced windows. Each is a 2/2 horizontally divided sliding sash without horns, set within a moulded render architrave with an entablature supported on foliated consoles terminating in bird motifs. The windows have painted render cills. The second floor windows diminish in height but follow the same alignment. These are 2/1 sliding sashes with moulded architraves, decorative projecting keyblocks, painted render cills and flat apron panels connecting the cill to the entablature below. A modern hanging sign is positioned centrally between the first floor windows.

The ground floor features V-channelled banded rustication. The first floor is similarly rusticated with V-channels, while the upper floor is lined with a projecting eaves course.

The left and right gables form party walls with adjacent properties. Access to the rear elevation was not possible, but internal inspection reveals a modern single storey extension abutting the rear wall at ground floor level. The first floor left return has blank rear and left walls with two small sliding sash windows to its right cheek. The first floor right bay contains a tall 1/1 sliding sash window without horns, while the left bay has a 1/1 sash. Between these bays at half landing level is a semicircular headed Georgian glazed sliding sash window. The second floor has 1/1 sliding sash windows to both right and left bays. A fixed semicircular window occupies the central bay between the second floor and attic.

The building appears on the 1835 Ordnance Survey map. The 1863 valuation records it as a dwelling of 3¾ storeys. The adjacent property at number 74, then associated as a warehouse, became a separate entity around 1865. The building now stands within a conservation area, though it is not itself listed.
