Description
This is a three-storey building located to the right of a pair on Margaret Street in Newry. It occupies a corner position with Margaret Street and Margaret Square, with a canted corner feature. The building is of interest as part of the wider streetscape and Margaret Square, though it does not possess sufficient architectural merit for individual listing.
The façade faces Margaret Street, and the right elevation fronts onto Margaret Square. The roof is hipped and slate-covered, featuring rendered chimneys rising from the rear and right-side pitches. The walls are rendered, with a projecting brick eaves course and stepped rendered quoins defining the canted corner. The ground floor entrance on the front elevation features plain timber pilasters supporting a modern signboard. The door itself is a modern timber design with a two-pane transom. The remaining ground floor wall is plain. The upper floor windows are aligned with the adjacent building at number 14. At the first floor, there are three equally spaced 6/6 sliding sash windows without horns. The second-floor openings are similarly spaced but slightly reduced in height. The windows to the left and right are 6/6 sliding sashes. The central opening now contains a modern casement window with an off-centre mullion indicating a modern internal partition. A large brass teapot projects from the canted corner at first-floor level. The right elevation incorporates a modern shop with aluminium-framed windows and doors and an illuminated box sign above. The upper floors have two windows each, matching the Margaret Street façade and featuring 6/6 sliding sashes without horns, except for a 6/1 window on the first floor right, with all windows having granite cills. The rear elevation abuts a lower building with a rendered elevation and no window openings. The left elevation is a gable shared with number 14.
The building is shown on an 1835 Ordnance Survey map with its neighbour. Valuation records from 1838 indicate it was occupied by Anderson and Greer, who operated a coach factory at the rear. An early 20th-century photograph depicts the upper floors as housing Stapleton’s Academy, and showcasing the "Golden Teapot" landmark. The architectural practice Milligan and Reside occupied the building from 1922 to 1999. The building was constructed between 1820 and 1839 and is situated within the Carneyhough townland and a conservation area. It was originally used as a house and is currently occupied as a shop.
