61 Hill Street, Newry, Co Down, BT34 1AF

This is a two-storey building forming part of a terrace on the east side of Hill Street in Newry. The building dates from approximately 1820 to 1839 and is located within the Carneyhough townland. It was originally used as a coach factory, as shown on an 1835 Ordnance Survey map and confirmed by valuation records through 1911, when it transitioned to a shop.

The façade is of painted smooth render. A modern shopfront occupies the ground floor, featuring an illuminated box sign. The first floor has two windows with keyblocked, moulded architraves, and both are currently boarded up. The second floor has two segmentally headed windows resembling those on the first floor, but with modern casement windows. A rectangular stucco plaque is positioned between the second-floor windows. This plaque features an embossed cartouche with a scrolled edged shield divided into four quarters. The shield’s first and fourth quarters are red, the second and third are green, with an unknown emblem and an embossed harp respectively. The cartouche is ringed by a belt and topped with a royal crown. Supporting lions rampant and a chained unicorn stand on a foliated plinth which originally incorporated a scroll. The plaque relates to the firm's royal appointment as coachbuilders. The roof has cyma recta rainwater goods. The left and right elevations are adjoined by neighbouring buildings; the rear elevation was not inspected.
