Description

This early 18th-century commercial building is located on Margaret Street in Newry, positioned to the left of a pair of three-storey buildings within a terrace on the south side of the street. It is of interest as part of the streetscape when viewed with number 16, but it does not possess sufficient architectural merit to be formally listed.

The building has a hipped roof covered in natural slate, with a cement-rendered chimney rising from the left elevation. Half-round plastic rainwater goods are fitted. There are two cast iron rooflights, one to the rear of the left hip and one to the front slope. The façade is faced with painted, lined render, topped with a projecting brick eaves course. A modern recessed door provides access to the upper floors on the right-hand side. The ground floor currently contains an inappropriate modern shopfront with timber sheeted casing, and a flush door to the extreme left leads to a rear yard. Original cast iron posts once supported the fascia along the front wall line, but these are now largely obscured by an illuminated box sign. The first floor has two modern top-hung windows with signboards in the lower sashes. The second floor has two 6/6 sliding sash windows without horns. All façade windows are fitted with granite cills, and a modern advertising fascia is fixed below the second-floor cill. A plastic sign projects to the right of the right-hand second-floor window.

The right gable is a party wall shared with number 16, while the left elevation abuts a lower building. The remaining walls are rendered. The rear elevation is cement-rendered and is abutted in the centre and to the left by a two-storey return with a hipped roof that ties into the main roof. The remainder of the rear wall has an alleyway to the street at ground floor level, with a window on each floor above. These rear windows are 4/4 sliding sashes, although the bottom sash of the first-floor window is boarded up externally. The walls of the rear return are rendered. The left cheek and rear wall are blank, while the right cheek has four equally spaced openings; the second from the left is a sheet metal door, and the others are blocked-up windows. There are four openings on each upper floor, aligned with those below. The first-floor openings are 6/6 sliding sashes, and the second-floor openings are 6/3 sliding sashes, slightly reduced in height.

The building appears on an Ordnance Survey map of 1835, alongside number 16. A valuation from 1838 indicates it was occupied by Anderson and Greer, who operated a coach factory at the rear. This firm may have been coachmakers by royal appointment.
