6 Upper Water Street, (formerly 6 Abbey Way), Newry, Co Down, BT34 1DJ

This is an early 19th-century building, likely constructed between 1820 and 1839, located on the west side of Upper Water Street (formerly Abbey Way) in Newry. The building is three stories high with an attic, and sits within the Carneyhough townland.

The building has been substantially remodelled and is now a shop with residential accommodation above. The roof is pitched and covered in natural slate, with the gable end incorporating remnants of a demolished adjacent building and a modern brick chimney. A cast iron skylight is positioned on the front roof slope. Modern plastic rainwater goods are present, with a downpipe located to the left of the façade. The wall facing the street is finished with painted lined cement render. At ground floor level is a modern shop front with a recessed entrance leading to the upper floors. The shop front is contemporary, featuring a large plastic fascia and a roller shutter over the entrance door. There are three two-over-two sliding sash windows on each upper floor; the second-floor windows are reduced in height. The rear of the building was not inspected.

The building was shown on an Ordnance Survey map from 1835 and was originally valued as a house in 1838. In 1863 it’s recorded as being three and one-third storeys in height. By the end of the century, it had become a licensed premises. The property originally carried the address 6 Abbey Way, but the street name has since reverted to Upper Water Street.
