6 Margaret Street, Newry, Co Down, BT34 1DF

This is a pair of three-storey, two-bay classical town houses located on the south side of Margaret Street in Newry. Constructed between 1800 and 1819, they are situated within the oldest part of the town and share a pitched natural slate roof with the adjacent building at number 6. The front elevation is finished with painted lined render, featuring a projecting moulded cill course that continues to number 4, and a projecting eaves course. The ground floor now contains a modern shop with a large sheeted timber fascia. The upper floors each have three windows; the first floor windows are 6/6 sliding sash windows without horns and with granite cills. The second floor windows are modern top-hung casements in the original openings, but are smaller in height. The left gable is a party wall with number 4, while the right gable is rendered and unpainted. The rear elevation is cement rendered with modern replacement windows. The building is shown on an Ordnance Survey map from 1835 and was valued at £4.4.0 in 1838. An 1863 valuation described it as three and a half storeys high. The buildings were likely constructed at the same time as number 4. They are located within the Carneyhough townland and are situated within a conservation area.
