11-13 Margaret Street, Newry, Co Down, BT34 1DF

This is a three-storey building forming part of a terrace on the north side of Margaret Street in Newry. Likely built between 1820 and 1839, it has historical associations but has undergone significant alteration.

The roof is pitched and covered in modern tiles, with plastic rainwater goods and rendered chimneys featuring two moulded clay pots on each gable. The ground floor now contains a modern shopfront with blue powder-coated aluminium windows and doors, set within polished granite panels. Signage is etched and gilded into the fascia. The upper floor walls are rendered and feature banded rustication with a moulded cill course at the second floor and a moulded eaves course. Below the second-floor cill are embossed letters in a bold Victorian style that formerly read "White Cross Hotel”, although the eastern portion of the lettering is now missing. There are three windows on each floor; the first-floor windows sit on the shop fascia, while the second-floor windows are reduced in height. All windows are modern uPVC 1/1 sash windows with chamfered reveals and hood moulds, with the first-floor hood moulds linking to form a stringcourse. Rear access is unavailable.

The building was shown on an Ordnance Survey map from 1835 and was described in a valuation record from 1838 as two houses. By 1861, it was marked on an Ordnance Survey map as the "White Cross Hotel", and continued in this function at least until 1930. The building is located within the Carneyhogue townland and sits within a conservation area. It is currently used as offices.
