9 Hilltown Road, Newry, Co Down

This is a single-storey, four-bay house located on the east side of Hilltown Road in Carneyhough, Newry. The house likely dates from between 1840 and 1859. It is an extended vernacular house but has been significantly modernised and no longer contains any features of interest.

The roof is pitched and covered in natural slate, with a projecting gabled roof over the front door, which sits in the second bay from the left. There are three stepped, rendered chimneys: one at each gable end and a third on the right side of the second bay from the left. A photograph from 1970 shows a fourth chimney on the left side of the second bay. The rainwater goods are half-round plastic. The walls are wet-dashed with a smooth rendered basecourse. The main entrance is situated on the right side of the second bay from the left and consists of a modern six-panelled stained timber door with a semicircular fanlight above. All windows are modern, stained timber, top-hung, with granite cills. Each bay has one window, with the exception of the third bay from the left, which has two. The left and right gables are plain. The rear elevation has not been inspected. A modern bungalow has been built on the site of a former smithy, to the right of the house.

The house is possibly shown on an Ordnance Survey map from 1834, but was not recorded in the 1836 Valuation. It is definitely shown on an Ordnance Survey map from 1858.
