Elmgrove, 60 Rathfriland Road, Newry, Co Down

Elmgrove is a one-and-a-half-story, four-bay house situated on the north side of Rathfriland Road in Newry. The house has undergone substantial alterations and retains limited original fabric or character. The south-facing elevation features a pitched natural slate roof with three gabled dormers facing the road. There are modern cement-rendered chimneys at each gable and one between the third and fourth bays from the left. The rainwater goods are half-round plastic. The walls are rendered with a modern wet dash finish. A slightly projecting, flat-roofed porch is located in the third bay from the left, containing a modern stained six-panel timber door with a transom above. At ground floor level, there is a single modern, top-hung 1/1 timber window in each of the three room bays. The first floor has similar top-hung timber windows, inset into each gable dormer. Both gables are finished with a wet-dash render. A later single-story shed with a corrugated metal roof abuts the right gable, which also has two modern top-hung timber windows. The rear elevation was not inspected. The setting includes a small front garden with mature shrubs, bounded by a wet-dashed wall to the road, and an ashlar granite pier at the right end of the wall, featuring a projecting pyramidal granite cap. Metal gates opposite the porch are set within dashed posts topped with dressed pyramidal granite caps. The house was first depicted as ‘Nursery House’ on the 1858 Ordnance Survey map, suggesting a construction date between 1840 and 1859.
