Description
This is a one-and-a-half-story, three-bay house situated on the north side of Rathfriland Road, Newry, dating from around the mid-19th century, likely between 1840 and 1859. The building has undergone significant alteration and retains limited original fabric.
The house has a pitched roof covered in artificial slate, with dry-dashed chimneys on each gable. It features plain bargeboards and eaves fascias, as well as semicircular plastic gutters and downpipes. All walls are dry-dashed with a painted smooth render basecourse. A two-story porch, abutting the middle bay of the front (south-facing) elevation, incorporates an artificial slate roof tied into the main roof. The right-hand side of the porch has a doorway with a segmental head; the door itself is a six-panel painted timber design with a segmental headed timber transom above. Both the gable and left cheek of the porch contain a tall, narrow 1/1 top-hung casement window on the ground floor, with a similar window (though smaller) on the first floor. Identical windows are present in the left and right bays of the main block. All window openings have granite cills. The left gable has two small 1/1 top-hung windows to the upper floor, while the right gable features two 2/2 sliding sash windows. A single-story return abuts the rear elevation, with its roof tying into the main roof. Rear wall openings have been modernized.
Behind the house is a yard enclosed to the east and north by a two-story outhouse of L-plan. This outhouse is constructed of random granite rubble walls with red brick trimming. The property was first depicted on an Ordnance Survey map from 1858.
