Description

The Crown Bridge New is an early 19th-century bridge carrying the main Newry–Rathfriland road over the Clanrye River. Its style is consistent with the suggested date and is akin to the nearby Sheep Bridge, though slightly less ornate. It exemplifies early 19th-century bridge construction, its dressed stone embellishment contributing to its architectural interest, and provides a visual contrast to the original Crown Bridge nearby.

The bridge comprises three semicircular spans constructed from quarried rubble granite, with triangular cutwaters of dressed granite positioned on both the upstream and downstream sides, terminating at arch spring level. The voussoirs are finely dressed granite, featuring raised keystones. The parapet is topped with squared granite blocks. The road approaches the bridge in a dogleg fashion and has a slight hump as it crosses. The bridge curves at its east end, requiring corbelling to extend the end of the eastern arch on the downstream side.

Built in the 1810s when the current Newry–Rathfriland road replaced an older route to the east, the bridge is depicted on a proposal map from 1814 and the 1834 Ordnance Survey map. A contemporary Ordnance Survey Memoir notes the road’s winding nature due to avoiding hills, stating that it was maintained at county expense. Regarding the bridge itself, the memoir simply identifies it as a “three arch bridge ... on the new line of road.” The bridge exhibits industrial archaeological interest and possesses notable architectural merit relating to its style, proportions, ornamentation, plan form, and structural system, alongside local historical significance.
