Description
Ellen Vale is a one and a half storey, three-bay house dating from approximately 1800 to 1819. It is situated facing south on the north side of Upper Damolly Road, Newry, within a mature garden. The house is depicted on an Ordnance Survey map from 1834 and was noted in the Valuation Book of 1836 as ‘Ellen Vale’, occupied by David Hennon.
The building has a pitched roof covered in artificial slate, with wet-dashed chimneys on each gable. Modern timber bargeboards and eaves fascia overhang the eaves, and there are half-round plastic gutters. The walls are cement-dashed with a smooth base course. A porch projects from the centre bay of the front elevation; its pitched roof is covered in natural slate and ties into the main roof. The porch has a modern door on its right side. The façade has plastic, top-hung 6/6 windows with granite cills. There are two identical windows at ground floor level in each side bay, and one window to the ground and first floors of the porch gable. The right and left gables feature two large, modern plastic casement windows at upper floor level. The rear elevation has two windows similar to the front façade on the left bay. A plastic door and a tripartite plastic window are located on the right bay. Above the door on the rear elevation is a semicircular-headed plastic window, with a small casement window to its right.
The house sits within a mature planting of lawns, trees, and shrubs, enclosed by a modern wet-dashed wall. The building retains no original features of interest.
