Description

This is a late 19th-century farmhouse, a representative example of a building type once common in rural Ulster, though it does not possess specific architectural or historical significance.

The two-story, three-bay house is situated within a mature garden on the west side of Banbridge Road, with its main elevation facing east. It features a pitched roof covered in natural slate tiles, with terracotta ridge tiles and rendered skewbacks. Painted, rendered, and coped chimneys are present on each gable, complemented by metal rainwater goods and downpipes on the right side of the facade. The walls are line-rendered and painted, with stepped V-channelled stucco quoins. The ground floor central bay projects slightly, featuring a flat-headed porch with a flat asphalt roof. The porch walls have a chamfered basecourse supporting stucco pilasters on each face, culminating in moulded heads, a plain frieze, and a moulded stucco cornice. The main entrance is located on the right cheek of the porch within a stop-chamfered opening. The four-panelled door consists of two raised, fielded and bolection moulded bottom panels and two glazed top panels, with cast-iron door furniture. Single 2/2 sliding sash windows with horns and painted granite cills are found on each cheek of the porch. The remaining bays of the front elevation contain similar, larger windows, though other windows generally match this style. The left and right gables of the main block are blank. The rear elevation is adjoined by a two-story return wing with a pitched artificial slate roof integrated with the main roof’s pitch. The walls of the return wing are similar to the front façade, but lack quoins. A sheeted t +g door with a plain transom is on the ground floor left side; above is a single first-floor window. A window opening on the ground floor right has been partly infilled with a modern casement window. An original opening on the first floor right contains a modern casement window. The extension features a modern sheeted and glazed door on the left cheek, a large modern casement window (landscape format and without a cill) along the rear wall, and a blank right cheek. Small modern casement windows are located on each cheek of the first floor. A two-story rubble granite outbuilding with a pitched natural slate roof and brick dressings to the openings stands parallel to the rear of the house. Some ground floor openings are blocked, while pairs of narrow casement windows are found on the first floor. The building is set within a mature garden featuring a serpentine drive and a large monkey puzzle tree.

The property was first recorded in the 1913 Valuation revision book.
