Description
A two-storey house was built in the mid-19th century (approximately 1840-1859) and was located at 23 School Road, Rathfriland, Newry, County Down. It has since been demolished and replaced by a modern house set back from the road. The house first appears on an Ordnance Survey town plan from 1860, but not on a preceding map of 1833, suggesting a construction date in the middle of the 19th century. In about 1862, it was described in a valuation book as measuring approximately 28 feet by 18 feet and two storeys high. A 1970 survey card from the Historic Monuments and Buildings Branch described a house with rendered walls designed to resemble masonry, a slated roof, and double-hung windows with full glazing bars set in square openings. The survey concluded the style was “poor” and the house had a frontage of approximately 40 feet, appearing on Ordnance Survey maps from 1903 onwards. The house was originally situated in the townland of Lissize.
