Description
The General Hospital, located on Windsor Hill, Newry, was originally built between 1820 and 1839. It began as a fever hospital, situated on the site of former gasworks in Kilmorey Street. The building was described in a 1969 survey as a two-storey structure with a basement, featuring a hipped slated roof and rendered walls designed to resemble masonry. It had granite quoins, a platband at the first floor level, and a chamfered string course at ground floor level. The central bay projected forward and was topped with a pediment containing a blind oculus. All windows were double-hung with glazing bars. A porch, approached by four steps, was supported by unfluted Doric columns rising to an entablature, and it spanned nine windows. The site of the original fever hospital was marked on an Ordnance Survey map of 1834, and by 1902 it had become a ‘fever and general hospital’ as indicated on an Ordnance Survey map from that year. The building has since been demolished.
