1, 2 & 2a River Street, Newry, Co Down, BT34 2DQ

The building at 1, 2 & 2a River Street, Newry, was a group of three houses constructed between 1860 and 1879. As recorded in a 1969 survey, the houses dated to around 1880, although further information suggests they were built prior to 1880. The houses were two storeys with attics, with rendered walls and slated roofs. Dormer windows were present, featuring decorative bargeboards, and a rear building had particularly ornate bargeboards. The windows were double-hung with horizontal glazing patterns, set within openings with moulded arrises. The doors were flanked by plain pilasters, rising to consoles supporting a cornice, with modillions to the plain eaves cornice. A decorated ogee gutter was also a key feature. The building’s width accommodated seven windows. The site is within a conservation area, although, unfortunately, the building was demolished to make way for a new road.
