Description

This is a small, one-and-a-half-story, two-bay house dating to the mid-19th century, situated in the townland of Tamnyveagh, near Rostrevor, Newry. It is of vernacular design and was recorded as derelict. The south-facing front of the house faces into a yard, with the rear elevation overlooking Killowen Road.

The house has a pitched roof covered with natural slate and featuring a brick eaves course and tiled skews. A cast iron skylight is visible on the facade, and there are three gabled dormers at the rear. Each dormer has decorative timber bargeboards. Concrete-coped chimneys are positioned on each gable, and the walls are finished with a coloured lime wet-dash and a raised eaves course. There are no rainwater goods. The principal facade features a central modern entrance door and two window openings that originally contained sliding sash windows. Two small, modern, top-hung timber windows are set into the left gable, on either side of the chimney breast at attic level. The rear elevation includes a 1/1 sliding sash window to the left bay and a 4/2 sliding sash window to the right bay. Three two-paned casement windows are located on the first floor, one in each dormer. A modern top-hung casement window is found on the right gable at attic level.

The house was constructed around 1850, appearing on the 1859 Ordnance Survey map but not the 1834 edition. According to the 1863 Valuation, it measured approximately 11 yards by 6 yards and was one-and-a-half stories high, dimensions that correspond to the current building. Local tradition holds that the house was the birthplace and home of "Giant Murphy", a man born in 1834 who reached a height of 8 feet 1 inch and gained fame as a performer in the circus before his death in 1862. He is buried in Kilbroney Churchyard, where a Celtic cross commemorates him. The building is now set within a modern farmyard.
