Description
This is a two-storey, three-bay house situated on the north side of Killowen Road in Rostrevor, County Down. While considered to have pleasant qualities, it does not meet the criteria for statutory listing.
The house, dating from 1896, has a pitched roof covered in natural slate, with three cement-rendered and coped chimneys – one at each gable and one on the party wall between the left and central bays. Tile coped verges are present. Three gabled dormers project from the front facade, each featuring a plain timber bargeboard. The rainwater goods are of semicircular metal design. All walls are cement rendered, with raised stepped render quoins marking each corner of the principal façade. A modern timber door with a glazed pane is located on the right bay. An electric light is positioned above the door. Ground floor bays contain 2/2 sliding sash windows with concrete sills, and similar windows are found in all first-floor dormers. The left gable is blank.
The rear elevation is adjoined across its entire length by a return with a mono-pitched roof continuing from the main roof but at a shallower angle. This return is also cement rendered and features a t+g sheeted timber door and two windows - a 2/2 window matching those on the front facade and a smaller, modern fixed window. A single-storey return abuts the right gable of the main block, matching the depth and construction of the main block with a pitched natural slate roof and no chimneys. It has a single 2/2 window facing the front.
A small front garden is enclosed by a smooth rendered and coped wall with two pedestrian gates. The garden extends to the left of the house.
Although a building is marked on an 1834 Ordnance Survey map of the area, the current house was rebuilt and improved in 1896, as noted in a Valuation Revision book entry that details dimensions of 38ft x 17ft x 16ft.
