Description
This is a granite milestone located opposite Wood House, between numbers 86 and 96 Shore Road, Rostrevor, Newry. It is one of approximately 20 surviving milestones out of an original 24 that marked the route between Newry and Newcastle.
The milestone is a finely dressed granite post with a pyramidal top, positioned on the left side of the road when travelling towards Kilkeel. It projects about 75cm above ground and measures 30cm square in cross-section. The number "8" is incised at a height of 17cm on each of its three road-facing sides. A crow’s-foot benchmark is carved into the top front corner.
Dating from around the early 19th century, likely between 1800 and 1819, the milestone's use of Irish miles to indicate distance from Newry supports this dating. It is not depicted on any Ordnance Survey map edition. It is of industrial archaeological interest and is owned by the local government.
