Description
42 Victoria Square is part of a group of terraced houses developed in stages between 1882 and 1903 in Rostrevor, County Down. The development was spurred by the construction of the Shore Road in 1877, which accommodated the new Warrenpoint and Rostrevor Tramline. The first block, built in or just before 1882, consists of a pair of semi-detached houses at the southeastern corner, originally called ‘Glenmore Terrace’ and now known as numbers 42-44. This was followed by Victoria Terrace (numbers 34-38) on the eastern side (1886-87), and Albert Terrace (numbers 14-22) to the north (between 1898 and 1903). Numbers 42 and 43 were constructed in 1882 by John Mahood. The original occupant of number 42 was Emma Elizabeth Saurin in 1883, who was followed by Elizabeth E. Mahood, Sarah Gilchrist, a ‘Miss Laing’, Robert W. Rolston and Sarah R. McFadden and Agnes Rose. Madeline Stewart owned and lived in the property by 1936, by which time it was known as ‘Craig-a-va’. Jean Hardy was recorded as the owner or occupant from 1962 until at least 1972. The building is a private residence.
