Description

Victoria Square in Rostrevor comprises three blocks of dwellings developed between 1882 and 1903, along with detached properties added to the north and south sides during the mid to later 20th century. The area's development was likely stimulated by the construction of Shore Road in 1877, which accommodated the Warrenpoint and Rostrevor Tramline. The first block, Glenmore Terrace (present numbers 42-44), was built around 1882. This was followed by Victoria Terrace (numbers 34-38) in 1886-87, developed by David Mahood and James McMurray, and Albert Terrace (numbers 14-22) between 1898 and 1903. No. 34, at the north of the group, was first occupied by Edward Robinson Durant, a merchant, from around 1887 to 1897. Subsequent occupants included John McCullagh (or McCullough), who resided there until around 1908, although the 1901 census records siblings Amy and Charlie McCullough living there, describing the house as a "2nd class" residence with 15 rooms in use. Ellen (or Eleanor) Gywnne was the householder in 1908, running the property as a lodging house alongside her father. Later residents included Frederick Beatty (1915), Anne Wilmot (1922), Dr. [?Kyle] Humphries (1941), Dr. B. McLaughlin (1956), John N. Livingstone (1963), Rev. Charles Mullan (or Mollan) (1964), and Desmond Nash (1971). A 1922 advertisement described the houses as having drawing, dining, and morning rooms, a bathroom, WC, several large and airy bedrooms, a front garden, and a rear yard with outbuildings.
